Privacy at a glance: you can use the dialing tool, the Espresso Compass, Coffee Theory, and the Dial It In game without creating an account, preference cookies are functional only, and presets, coffee bags, and game progress are stored only when you sign in and use those features.

No advertising profiles or data selling.
Optional Google sign-in for presets, coffee bags, and saving your Dial It In game progress.
Your username and scores appear on game leaderboards only as described below.
Account deletion, including all game data, is available from the profile page.
What you post in Tamp Talk is public under your username; link-only shots are visible to anyone with the link.
Tamp Talk posts stay after account deletion, anonymized - you can delete them yourself first.

1. Who we are

Dial Your Shot is operated by PiroTechnique. This policy explains how information is handled when you visit or use the Service.

2. Information we collect

The Service collects different types of information depending on whether you use it as a guest or as a signed-in user.

2a. Guest use (no account)

If you use the Service without signing in, only browser-side preference cookies are stored (see section 3). No personal information is collected. The espresso values and taste ratings you enter in the dialing tool and the Espresso Compass are processed on our server only while your page is open, to calculate suggestions, and are not saved. Shots you record on the Espresso Compass are kept only for your current visit.

2b. Signed-in use (Google account)

When you sign in with Google, we receive the following information from Google:

Your Google Account ID (an opaque identifier used to recognize returning users)
Your email address
Your display name, if Google includes it in the sign-in response

We store this information in our database alongside a user-chosen username (set during first login), account creation and last-login timestamps, and the data you create through the features below.

Espresso presets you explicitly save include all espresso parameters you entered at the time of saving: dose, yield, extraction time, water temperature, machine pressure, pre-infusion setting, roast level, bean freshness, grind distribution, and grind size settings (current, finest, coarsest, and direction).

Your username is public: it appears on game leaderboards, next to your Tamp Talk posts, on your public profile page (which lists your public threads, recent replies, reputation and badges) and on result cards you share. Your email address and Google display name are never shown to other users.

2c. Coffee bags

When you start a coffee bag in the main app, we store:

the name you give the bag (please do not include personal information in it);
the bag's recipe - the same espresso parameters as a preset - either the starting recipe it was seeded with or the recipe you confirmed with "This one's good";
when the bag was created, when it was dialed in, and when it was archived;
the name of the earlier bag whose recipe it started from, if any.

Starting a new bag archives the previous one. Archived bags remain in your account so that your next bag can start from your latest good recipe.

3. Cookies stored on your device

The Service stores the following preference cookies in your browser:

ecc_lang - preferred display language
ecc_units - preferred unit system
ecc_temp - preferred temperature unit
ecc_theme - preferred visual theme
ecc_grind - your current grinder setting on the Espresso Compass
ecc_grind_sps - your optional grinder calibration on the Espresso Compass (seconds of shot time per grinder step)

These cookies are used for functionality only - they remember your settings between visits. They are not used for advertising or tracking. They remain on your device for up to 365 days unless you clear them sooner.

When you sign in, the Service sets an authentication cookie to keep you logged in. It is necessary for sign-in to work and expires after 30 days without use, or when you sign out. The Service also uses strictly necessary security cookies set by the web framework, for example to protect forms against cross-site request forgery.

If you press "Share this shot" before signing in, the shot on your screen is kept temporarily in your browser's local storage (tt_share_draft) so that it survives the Google sign-in. It is removed as soon as it is restored and ignored after one hour.

4. How we use your information

To identify you across sessions and link your saved presets, coffee bags, and game progress to your account
To store and retrieve your espresso presets and coffee-bag recipes at your request
To run the Dial It In game: scoring shots, tracking progress and streaks, and showing leaderboards
To allow you to set and update a username visible within the app and on game leaderboards
To maintain the security and integrity of the Service, including detecting score manipulation
To run Tamp Talk: showing your posts, votes (as net scores) and public profile, sending in-app notifications about replies, mentions and solutions, and handling reports and moderation
To generate preview images of shared shots and game result cards for social networks and messaging apps

We do not use your personal information for advertising, profiling, or marketing purposes. We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties except as described in this policy.

5. Game data (Dial It In)

Dial It In, the espresso training game, can be played without an account. As a guest, nothing about your play is stored on our servers: each shot is scored and then discarded, and your attempts and unlocked levels exist only in the open page until you leave it. When you play signed in, the following data is stored on our servers and associated with your account:

Overall progress — your current career level, total score, number of shots played, number of sweet-spot shots, and when you last played.
Career progress — for each level you have passed: best score, stars, number of attempts, completion time, a snapshot of your best attempt (parameters, puck prep, and stop point, used to replay it as a ghost), and your most recent attempt (used for the "one change at a time" comparison).
Daily Challenge progress — for each daily challenge you play: best score, attempts used, the score of each attempt, the parameters of your best and most recent attempts, and whether you submitted your score to the leaderboard.
Streaks — your current and best daily streak, the date of your last counted daily, and your available and used streak freezes.
Weekend Gauntlet — the weekend you played, the score of each stage, and your total.
Defect Codex and achievements — how many times you encountered, corrected, and correctly diagnosed each espresso defect, when you mastered it, and which achievements you earned and when.
Virtual equipment — the wear of your virtual grinder burrs, the cleanliness of your virtual group head, shots since your last virtual backflush, and when you last maintained it.
Leaderboard entries — your username, score, game mode, the date, and the parameters of the scoring shot.

What other people can see. Leaderboards show your username, score, and date. The all-time, weekly, and daily leaderboards are visible to anyone visiting the game, including visitors who are not signed in. Guest play never appears on leaderboards. A Daily Challenge score appears on leaderboards only after you submit a passing score; Career scores are added to the all-time leaderboard automatically. Training, Diagnose, and Weekend Gauntlet results are never shown on leaderboards. The recipe parameters stored with a leaderboard entry are not shown to other players.

Once a Daily Challenge has closed, the winning attempt of that day may be shown to other players as a "ghost" replay: the pour curve (grams over time) and stop point, without the player's username.

If you use the share button, the game creates a text summary of your Daily Challenge result that you can paste wherever you like. We do not post anything on your behalf.

Game data is used only to support the game features and is not used for advertising or profiling.

Result cards. When you share a Daily Challenge or Career result, a result card is created with a copy of that result (score, stars, attempt scores, streak, and the date or level) and your username. Anyone with its link can view it; it never includes the recipe or the defect. Result cards are deleted with your account.

5a. Tamp Talk (community)

When you use Tamp Talk, the following is stored and associated with your account:

Shared shots — the parameters and tasting notes of the shot you share, the diagnosis calculated at that moment, and any setup details you choose to add (machine, grinder, beans).
Threads and replies — the text you write, when you wrote or edited it, earlier versions of edited posts (kept for moderation), and each thread's language and visibility.
Votes — which posts you liked or disliked. Only the net score is shown publicly; who voted is never shown.
Reports — reports you submit (reason, optional note, and a copy of the reported text) and moderation decisions.
Notifications — replies to your posts and whether you have read them.

What other people can see. Posts show your username (never your Google name or email) and the date. Public threads are visible to anyone and may be indexed by search engines; link-only threads can be opened by anyone who has the link. When a thread link is shared, a preview image of the shot (compass, recipe and tasting notes) is generated for social networks and messaging apps.

When you delete your account, your votes, notifications and your link to any reports are deleted. Your posts and shared shots remain, anonymized as "[deleted user]", so the discussions stay readable. If you want a post's text removed, delete the post before deleting your account, or contact us.

6. Technical and server-side data

When you access the Service, technical data may be processed by the hosting environment and network infrastructure, including IP address, user agent, requested URL, timestamps, referrer, and basic diagnostic information. This may be used for security, fraud prevention, performance monitoring, debugging, and service reliability.

7. Analytics

The Service uses Umami Analytics, hosted on our own server, to understand aggregate usage. Analytics may process information such as pages viewed, referrer, browser type, device type, and approximate location derived from IP address. Umami does not use cookies, and analytics data is not shared with a third-party analytics provider. Analytics are not used for advertising, cross-site tracking, or profiling individual users.

8. Third-party services

The Service uses Google Sign-In for authentication. By signing in with Google, you are subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We request only the minimum permissions necessary: your email address and your Google account identifier. We do not request access to your Google Drive, contacts, calendar, or any other Google services.

The Service also uses Google Fonts to load the Inter typeface. When your browser requests font resources from Google, Google may receive technical information such as your IP address. See Google's Privacy Policy for details.

The Gear Recommendations page contains Amazon affiliate links. We do not share any of your information with Amazon. If you click one of these links, you leave our site and Amazon may set its own cookies to attribute a purchase to us; we only receive aggregated reports of qualifying purchases, not your identity. Amazon's privacy notice applies on Amazon's website.

The Service may link to other external websites, including Ko-fi for optional tips. If you visit an external site, that site's own privacy notice applies.

9. Data retention and account deletion

Your account data (Google ID, email, display name, username), saved presets, coffee bags (including archived bags), and all game data are retained for as long as you maintain an account with the Service.

You may delete your account at any time from your Profile page. Deleting your account permanently and irreversibly removes all data associated with your account from our database, including:

your user record (email, display name, username);
all saved espresso presets;
all coffee bags and their recipes, including archived bags;
all game progress, career level completions, attempt history, and ghost snapshots;
all daily challenge entries, scores, and streaks;
all Weekend Gauntlet runs, Defect Codex progress, achievements, and virtual equipment state;
all leaderboard entries (daily, weekly, and all-time);
all Tamp Talk votes and notifications (your posts and shared shots are kept but anonymized - see section 5a);
all shared game result cards.

This action cannot be undone. After deletion, you are automatically signed out.

Preference cookies remain on your device until they expire or are manually deleted through your browser settings.

10. Legal bases for processing

Where GDPR or similar laws apply, we rely on one or more of the following legal bases: providing the Service you requested (contract performance), our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Service, and compliance with legal obligations.

Moderating Tamp Talk - reviewing reports, hiding posts and suspending accounts that break the community rules - is based on our legitimate interest in keeping the community safe and useful.

11. Your rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights relating to your personal data, including the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing. You may exercise the right to deletion directly by deleting your account from the Profile page. For other requests, contact us at the address below.

You can edit or delete your own Tamp Talk posts at any time. If you deleted your account and also want the posts that remained (anonymized) removed, contact us and tell us which ones.

12. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children in violation of applicable law.

13. International access

The Service may be accessed from multiple countries. Third-party providers (including Google) may process data in jurisdictions different from your own. By using the Service, you acknowledge that such cross-border processing may occur where permitted by applicable law.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version becomes effective when posted on this page. The "Last updated" date reflects the latest revision.

15. Language

This Privacy Policy is written in English and may be offered in other languages for your convenience. If there is any discrepancy between the English version and a translation, the English version prevails.
